A starter motor of the pre-engaged type has a stator, a rotor, a rotor shaft and a pinion assembly mounted on the rotor shaft for rotation therewith and axial movement relative thereto into and out of an operative position. A solenoid is mounted in a casing of the motor and includes a coil and a plunger assembly. The plunger assembly includes a spring biased plunger carrying a plate having a slot therein. A nylon moulding is mounted in the slot and biased by a spring against an end of the slot remote from the plunger. The nylon moulding itself has a pair of slots therein which receive respective ends of a bifurcated lever. The lever is pivoted intermediate its ends and is provided with a yoke connection with the pinion assembly. The bifurcated form of the lever and the slots in the nylon moulding reduce wear of the lever in service.

The starter comprises a housing 1 with a stator 2 and a rotor 3 located on it, on the shaft 4 of which a drive 5 with gear 6 is mounted. The gear 6 is moved along the shaft 4 by an electromagnetic relay 7 with an armature 8 through a lever 9 made in the upper part in the form of a plug 10 with teeth 11, and fixed in the starter on the axis 12 with the possibility of rotation. The lower bifurcated part 13 covers the actuator 5 and mates with the protrusions 14. The armature 8 of the relay 7 is provided with a rod 15 with a longitudinal groove 16, in which a plate 18 made of plastic, for example nylon, pressed by a spring 17, is mounted with a possibility of displacement relative to the rod 15. The fork 10 of the lever 9 covers the rod 15, while the teeth II are included in the window 19 of the plate, made on different sides from its axis. To ensure relative movement of the lever 9 and the plate 18, the teeth 11 are made convex. The plate 18 from the side opposite the anchor 8 has a trapezoidal recess 20 located between the windows 19 and mated to the end of the groove 16 of the rod 15.
Stater works as follows.
When the starter is turned on, the armature 8 of the electromagnetic relay 7, being retracted, moves the rod 15 through the spring 17 and the plate 18, the lever 9, the teeth of the II fork 10 of which are included in the window 19 of the plate. Turning around the axis 12, the lever 9 with the lower part 13 through the jack ”! 14 moves the actuator 5 with gear 6 towards the flywheel of the starting engine (not shown in the drawing). When the anchor 8 of the relay 7 is fully retracted, the gear 6 does not reach the stop on the shaft 4 for a certain amount, the contacts of the starter motor close, the rotor shaft 4 starts to rotate. The axial force resulting from the engagement of the drive-shaft 4 of the rotor 3, the gear moves along the shaft 4 until it stops on it. In this case, the lever 9 also moves, the fork 10 in its upper part with the teeth 11 moves the plate 18 towards the armature 8 of the relay 7, compressing the spring 17. The trapezoidal recess 20 provides a reliable fixation of the plate 18 with the rod 15 when it is returned to its original position.
The proposed design of linking the lever with the armature of the electromagnetic relay increases its reliability and increases the service life of the starter.
